Lincoln Marries Mary

Abraham Lincoln and Mary Todd were married on November 4, 1842, in Springfield, Illinois. It was a simple ceremony attended by a few close friends and family members. The couple had been engaged for three years before they tied the knot.

Abraham Lincoln was thirty-three years old at the time, and Mary Todd was twenty-three. They met each other at a party in 1839, and despite their differences, they fell in love. Lincoln was a tall and lanky lawyer, while Mary was a socialite from a wealthy family.

Their courtship was not without its challenges. Mary’s family was initially opposed to the match, as they believed Lincoln was not wealthy enough for their daughter. However, Lincoln was determined to win them over, and he eventually did.

The wedding itself was a small and intimate affair, held at the Edwards’ family home in Springfield. Reverend Charles Dresser, a close friend of Lincoln’s, officiated the ceremony. The bride wore a simple white dress, and the groom wore a black suit.

After the ceremony, the couple went on a short honeymoon to Niagara Falls. They returned to Springfield a few weeks later, and Lincoln resumed his law practice. Mary became pregnant shortly after that and gave birth to their first son, Robert, in 1843.

Despite the challenges they faced, Abraham Lincoln and Mary Todd had a strong and enduring relationship. They went on to have three more children together, and Mary was a devoted wife and mother. She was often by Lincoln’s side during his political career and played an active role in his campaigns.

Tragically, their love story was cut short when Lincoln was assassinated in 1865. Mary was devastated by his death and struggled with mental illness in the years that followed. However, their love and commitment to each other endures as a testament to the power of true love.
