On February 9, 1964, the Beatles first appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show. The show began with Ed Sullivan telling the audience that Elvis Presley and his manager had sent the Beatles a telegram wishing them success in America. The Beatles were then introduced and performed “All My Loving” and “Till There Was You.”
The Beatles appearance on the show is considered a significant milestone in American pop culture. It was also the beginning of what is known as the British Invasion. The broadcast had more than seventy-three million viewers, a record in the United States at the time. It was The Ed Sullivan Show’s first time in seven years that they topped the nightly ratings chart.
